Honda, NASA and CalTech may have found a real alternative to lithium-ion batteries

Honda Research Institute connected with the California Institute of Technology and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has grown a battery which hasn’t just a higher energy density but also a better ecological equilibrium than preceding batteries.

The fresh battery chemistry supplies almost 10 times greater energy density and upward to ten times more energy than current battery technologies, and more positive ecological equilibrium. The breakthrough printed by investigators at the Science magazine is that they have triumphed in functioning a fluoride ion battery (FIB) in room temperature.

Unlike lithium-ion batteries, FIBs aren’t that prone to overheating, and procuring the raw materials such as FIBs is much more environmentally friendly than pulling cobalt and lithium.

Although FIBs are considered strong candidates for its next generation of high density power resources, their particular temperature conditions made them unsuitable for ordinary usage – at least till today. Currently, ion-conducting solid-state fluoride batteries have to be worked at temperatures over 150° C (302° Fahrenheit) for the electrolyte to become conductive.

To create the battery related to software such as smart phones or electric automobiles, the study group developed a procedure for fabricating a fluoride ion mobile which may be operated at room temperature. The breakthrough came with the building of a stable liquid fluoride-based electrolyte with higher working voltage and high ionic conductivity. In mix with a combination cathode with a so-called core-shell nanostructure of aluminum, lanthanum and fluorine, the investigators revealed reversible electrochemical cycles in room temperature.
